A small codfish, blue whiting is unique among the cod family as an entirely open ocean pelagic fish.

Mature blue whiting is found in the open sea, near the surface or in mid-water, but can also be found at depths of 1,000 metres. Blue whiting is highly migratory, but at irregular times of the year.

Our fishing grounds

Blue whiting is caught in the North Atlantic (FAO area 27) from January to June. Stock levels are managed multilaterally by Norway, the EU, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.

Fishing method

Blue whiting is caught with a mid-water pelagic trawl (OTM).
